A pattern that
stands off the page and is lit like a surface

Set a page in pixels, pick a family, and Reliefer builds the whole field in three dimensions and renders it — tops, side walls, cast shadows and a material. Clear a panel where your type goes and the relief gives way to it. Es gratis. De verdad.

Seven families.
Prisms, domes, pyramids and rings on a lattice; and three continuous surfaces — a corrugation, a wall of cells and folded cloth.
The same mask as Patterner.
Three shapes, a feather, a roughened edge. Ground cleared by any of them is cleared.
A light you set.
Azimuth and elevation, the strength of the shadow and how far its edge is spread.
Packaging materials.
Board, kraft, black card, gloss, aluminium and brass — the same figures the Extruder uses.
Straight down or isometric.
One tilt dial from an embossed board to a tray of objects, with a preset at each end.
Nothing is uploaded.
The scene is built and rendered in the page. No account, no credits, no watermark.

What it does

A relief, not a drawing of one

How the field is built, what the mask does to it, and what comes back.

The families

Four ways for a surface to stand up

  • Bars: prisms on a square, brick or hex lattice, heights from a field
  • Studs: domes — bubble wrap, a stamped tray, a dot relief
  • Flutes: one continuous corrugation that can be made to wander
  • Facets: pyramids, which is where the light does the most work

The mask

Room for a headline, made in the pattern itself

  • A fade, a circle or a rounded panel, and as many as the job needs
  • Thin: the height recedes and a flat impress of the pattern is left
  • Sink: the motif keeps its size and goes down until the ground closes over it
  • Drop: the motif is there or it is not, thinned evenly over the fall

The light

At nought degrees of tilt, the light is the whole picture

  • Elevation and bearing, so the shadow rakes the way you want it to
  • How dark the shadow lands, separately from how much fill there is
  • How far its edge is spread, in page pixels rather than in texels
  • The camera tips from straight down to sixty degrees

The file

A picture at the size you asked for

  • PNG or JPG, rendered at the page’s own pixel size
  • The preview is the same scene at a smaller buffer, so nothing moves
  • Page from 200 to 8000 pixels a side
  • The pattern runs off all four edges, so it can be cropped anywhere

It never leaves the machine

  • The scene is built and rendered in your browser
  • Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is stored

What you can set

Every figure in pixels or degrees

Nothing here is a unitless dial whose range you have to find by dragging.

01

The field

  • Motifs across the page
  • How tall the tallest stands, in pixels
  • How much of its cell a motif fills
  • How much the heights vary
  • How far across the page the hills are
  • Square, brick or hex lattice
02

The mask

  • Fade, circle or rounded panel
  • Placed and sized by handles on the page
  • A feather, in pixels
  • A roughened edge, so a clearing is not a stencil
  • Inverted, to pattern the shape instead
  • Thin, sink or drop
03

The look

  • Tilt from 0 to 60 degrees
  • Turn all the way round
  • Light elevation and bearing
  • Shadow strength and softness
  • Motif material and ground material
  • The colour behind it all
04

The page

  • Width and height in pixels
  • 200 to 8000 a side
  • PNG or JPG
  • Rendered at the page’s own size
  • Zoom the preview without changing the file
  • The pattern bleeds off every edge

How it works

Four steps to a picture

Pick a family, clear the room your type needs, set the light, save the page.

1

Pick a family and a density

Which family, then how many across the page and how tall they stand.

2

Clear the room you need

Add a mask where the headline or logo goes and drag its handles on the page.

3

Set the light

Raking for an embossed board, higher for a tray of objects. Tip the camera to taste.

4

Save the picture

PNG or JPG at the page’s own pixel size, rendered from the same scene you were looking at.

What it is for

Where a relief earns its place

A lit surface says “material” in a way a flat pattern cannot.

Packaging backgrounds

A board that reads as board, behind a product shot or under a headline.

Material studies

Corrugation, quilting, a stamped tray — before anything is tooled.

Presentation slides

A page-sized picture at the pixel size the deck wants.

Web and app backgrounds

A relief at screen size, with a panel cleared where the copy sits.

Mock-up surfaces

Somewhere to stand a pack, in the same materials the Extruder uses.

Unannounced work

Nothing is uploaded, so an unreleased pattern stays on your machine.
